‘I CONDEMN THE RACIST ACCUSATION AND STATEMENTS’
03.02.2017-15:43
Greek Basketball Federation President Giorgos Vasilakopoulos in a statement as to why the Panathinaikos – Aris Greek Basketball final would not be played in Xanthi used the rhetoric ‘ we feared the Muslim minority would get involved in the events.’
This statement is one that cannot be accepted. It is racist. This statement is an irresponsible and irrational statement made by a sportsman which accuses the Western Thrace Turkish Minority. I strongly condemn the statement and expect him to abandon his position at once.
In the event of not executing the honour of resignation, I expect the relevant minister to take action. In particular I wait to see the attitude of prosecutors against such statements, who have initiated investigations against our institution presidents for irrelevant reasons. The Western Thrace Turkish Minority was left in this country with an international treaty in 1923 and until today has never given premiums to violence and has always stood against violence. In spite of all the injustices the minority has been subjected to it has always used its democratic rights within a legal framework. Using the name of such a peaceful minority alongside violent incidents is ungratefulness and calumnious. As the Western Thrace Turkish Minority we do not accept that sports which feeds love and brotherhood to be used for racist and ugly goals and thus expect an urgent apology. We will not allow anybody to damage the existing peace and neighbourly relations between the majority and minority in the region with false rhetoric and accusations. As the FEP Party President on behalf of my party and minority I share with the public condemnation of the statement which is an irresponsible accusation. Regards, Mustafa Ali CAVUS FEP Party President Share
