Athens Mosque Management Must Be Reviewed
20.09.2017-14:39
As the Friendship and Equality Peace (FEP) Party, we are closely monitoring developments related to the announced mosque that will serve in Athens.
We witnessed the appointment of board members by the Ministry of Education for the Athens Mosque, which has not yet been opened. The fact that there are only two Muslims on the 7-member board of the mosque is truly astounding and raises question marks.
The fact that Muslims in Athens will not have a say in the first official mosque is serious and thought- provoking. While waiting for the negation arising from the lack of a mosque and cemetery in Athens for hundreds of thousands of Muslims, including Western Thracians to be eliminated, the absence of Muslims on the first official board of the mosque reflects intolerance of diversity. While acknowledging the necessity of the state's supervision, there is nothing more natural than a place of worship for Muslims to be managed by members of the religion. It is both dangerous and contrary to democracy and human rights that hundreds of thousands of people who belong to the Islamic religion regarded as insecure and as a ‘potential danger’. As the FEP Party we would state our expectation that the Sate and competent authorities should be more sensitive about the basic rights of Muslims who contribute to the development and live in our country and should avoid any movements or initiatives which will cause them to be regarded as a ‘potential danger’ source. We would therefore state that we anticipate the Athens Mosque to serve without any further delay and that they issue concerning the management of the Athens mosque is reviewed and that there is consultation with the Muslims in the capital.
