The announcement and intention of the government to bring a solution about the Mufti problem raised a serious expectation among the minority people. However the announced draft decree on Mufti issue in the previous days has caused disappointment and reaction for our minority people and minority institutions.

We would like to emphasize that we are against the mentality that will remove the autonomous structure of Muftis, which is the most important institution that affects the religious life of the Western Thrace Muslim Turkish Minority, and turn it into a government department where the officials (Mufti’s) will be appointed by state. Taking Mufti and muftis, who should serve the religious life of the Muslim community, under such a control of the state brings not a solution to this problem but insolubility.

We invite the Minister of Education and all relevant authorities to find a solution to this problem within a sincere and constructive dialogue with the minority, showing an utmost respect for not harming the autonomous structure of the mufti institution and also respecting international agreements.
